Columbus
was considered the “Lowell of the South” referring
to a very successful textile mill in Lowell,
Massachusetts. The water power provided by the
river was used by manufacturers to produce textile
products — cloth, towels, sheets, clothing
etc. Mill workers worked long hours for very
little pay in difficult conditions. Mills were
hot and crowded and cotton lint covered everything.
Fast moving, steam powered machines and looms,
an example of which can be seen in the gallery,
could be dangerous.
