VTS Conference at the Columbus Museum
February 17-18, 2012

Join us at the Columbus Museum for a conference on how to use Visual Thinking Strategies in the classroom and the museum. Our featured speakers will be Philip Yenawine, co-founder (with cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen) of Visual Understanding in Education (VUE), a non-profit educational research organization that develops and studies ways of teaching visual literacy and of using art to teach thinking and communication skills and Nick Gardner, Strategic Initiatives Director at VUE. Nick has worked with Visual Thinking Strategies as a classroom teacher, teacher trainer, and organizational director. His current focus is on the development of new program capacities and models for extending the reach and accessibility of VTS resources and experience to more educators across the country and abroad.

Online Song Writing Experience

Students, age 13-18, are invited to join an online forum hosted by the Museum to post their own songwriting samples, as well as encourage and support their fellow young songwriters. Please visit the Columbus Museum blog or Facebook page to post your lyrics and provide feedback for the other artists.
Battle of the Bands

For the first time the Museum will host a local teen battle of the bands concert. In celebration of our Rock & Roll Photography exhibition the Museum is invited local teen bands to perform in the Patrick Theatre for a packed audience. Each band must have at least one member enrolled in middle or high school to compete. Click here for a Registration Form and the Policies and Guidelines. A teen advisory board will choose the bands and community members involved in the music industry will serve as judges for the competition. Prizes will be awarded to the top three performers. Gallery Tales: Trade and Currency

This program will help students understand the trading process as well as commerce and the ideas behind currency and supply and demand. The students will learn about Native American trading systems in the galleries and then practice trading and devise a system of commerce by creating their own goods and currency to exchange in our studio. Drama Kids Inc. Spring Performances

Drama Kids Inc. will hold their spring theatrical performances at the Columbus Museum. Students from the area will perform in the Patrick Theatre. The Columbus Museum and Drama Kids Inc. established a partnership in 2009. Drama Kids Inc. offer students after school instruction on public speaking, improvisation skills, and building self-esteem. The instructors of the program use images from the Museum’s permanent collection as visual cues for weekly lessons throughout the school year culminating in a theatrical production in the spring. The performances are FREE and open to the public.

Museum On The Go!
Traveling Trunks are updated and ready to go! These FREE trunks provide hands-on activities for students in elementary schools. The activities connect to the museum's art and history collections, as well as to current Georgia Performance Standards. You'll find novelty items for your students to explore along with lesson plans and other resources.
The trunks are multi-disciplinary and multi-age. We feature an Animals in Art trunk for students in grades K-2. There are cave prints also available in this trunk for 4th and 5th grade students. The African Americans in Art and History trunk contains lessons
and activities for students in grades K-5. The new trunks, Civil War and Native Americans, are also K-5, although the GPS focuses on grades 4 and 5.
Trunks are FREE of charge for everyone and for Muscogee County teachers, delivery and pick up will be handled by the county Pony system.
