The Education Department at the Columbus Museum maintains a strong relationship to Muscogee County teachers and students. Educational programs and resources, including tours, curriculum guides, and programs related to the Museum's collection and exhibitions are offered throughout the school year. Designed for grades K-12, this guide is an excellent tool for teachers in explaining the Museum's art collection in terms of themes, artists, resources and more.

Gallery Tales: Life After Emancipation
February 2, 4, 9, 18, 22, 25 and March 2, 4, 9
9:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.

Students in K-5th grades will learn about our special history exhibition, Let the Records Show: Discovering the Valley's Black Community in Slavery and Freedom. Through storytelling and art, guest educator Patty Chamberlain will teach students about life after emancipation in the Chattahoochee Valley.

Middle schools from Muscogee County are invited to exhibit student artwork throughout March in celebration of Youth Art Month. The Museum will host the exhibition and a reception in their honor.

Slam Workshop
Friday, February 19
8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.

This year marks the ninth year for this popular program. Area high school students are invited to participate in a workshop led by an accomplished poet that will inspire them to write original poetry based on art in the Museum’s permanent collection.

Tours

The Columbus Museum offers several curriculum tours that support the Georgia Performance Standards. Schedule a visit for your class and check out our online resources in preparation for your visit. Traveling Trunks

Hands-on kits for subjects that range from African-American Art, Animals in Art, and Georgia Children at Work and Play to Landscapes, Portraits, and Women in History and Art. ALL KITS ARE AVAILABLE FREE OF CHARGE TO AREA TEACHERS. They contain audio and video tapes, artwork reproductions, activities and cross-curricular lesson plans.

Educator Resource Center

Complement your lessons with interdisciplinary, classroom-ready materials designed to help integrate art into the classroom from the Educator Resource Center. Resources are available for a wide range of ages on a variety of topics. Now available at www. erc-library.dabbledb.com.

Items can be delivered or returned through the MCSD Pony and be borrowed for a period of two weeks. Educators outside the school district are responsible for deliveries and returns. In order to borrow materials. The Educator Resource Center is located in the Education Wing of the Museum. For more information, please call 706.748.2562, ext. 653.

The Educator Mailing List ensures that you receive a personal copy of all Education Department mailings, which include updates about the Columbus Museum’s educator and education events. Student Exhibition

The Barbara Golden Pound Gallery, located in the Education wing on the Lower Level, is dedicated to the exhibition of student work from our community. The space provides teachers with an alternative venue for displaying student works and the gallery receives numerous visitors daily. Student exhibitions change monthly and are often influenced by current exhibitions or the Museum’s permanent collection. Installation is the responsibility of the teacher and reservations should be made well in advance.
