SCHOOL TOURS

Permanent Collection Tour
Grade Level: 3rd-12th

This tour will let students explore the permanent art collection while learning about social studies, language, art and science. This tour compliments our
online educator guide, giving teachers the freedom to use the guide in the classroom or in the Museum - or both!

Amazing Animals
Grade level: Pre-K - 1st

Have fun discovering the wild and crazy animals
in the Museum’s permanent collection
and the stories they tell. Through lively discussion,
students will compare and contrast; learn to read
visual clues in a work of art to decode its story;
and use their senses in imaginative exploration. The
optional hands-on activity involves creating animals
out of clay.

Colors and Shapes
Grade Level: Pre-K - 1st

Colors and shapes make up everything we see in
nature and in the man-made world. Students will
explore primary and secondary colors and all kinds
of shapes in fun works of art from the Museum’s
permanent collection. If you choose the optional
hands-on activity, students will learn about color
mixing by making a color wheel with Play Dough.

Learning to Look
Grade level: K-3rd

This interdisciplinary tour focuses on the elements
of art—line, color, texture, shape and form, and is
designed to meet elementary school curriculum
objectives.

Self-Guided Overview School Tours

Teachers can lead their students through the
permanent art collection or the history gallery and
have the flexibility to focus of specific topics students
are studying. Self-guided tour cards are available to
any teacher wanting to use them. These cards will
highlight specific works and artifacts along the way
that you may want to use to teach from.

Touch Tour for the Blind and Visually Impaired

The Columbus Museum offers an innovative new program developed to help the blind and visually impaired enjoy art through the use of alternate senses. During the 'Touch Tour,' specially trained docents give a pictorial description which includes information about the artwork and the artist. After the docent builds a mental picture, selected artworks are illustrated with the aid of a tactile reproduction of two-dimensional art in three-dimensions. Facial expressions, shapes, depth and textures are communicated with this aid. To enhance the visitor's experience, appropriate music is played in the gallery. The tour highlights paintings and sculpture from the Museum's permanent collection. This program is updated on a regular basis and may include new or additional components for your enjoyment. The tour can be reserved by groups or individuals. For more information about this program or to schedule a 'Touch Tour' please contact the Education Department at 706.748.2562, ext. 651.

Special thanks to Basset and Becker Advertising for their generous support of this project.
