Because it was impossible for owners to monitor every moment of their lives, slaves commonly had opportunities for brief unsupervised activities. Some slaves were routinely entrusted to travel independently and conduct small business transactions on behalf of masters. Many used their limited free time to earn money and buy goods for themselves. Though the practice was discouraged by law, many area shopkeepers welcomed the opportunity to do business with them.
